Do your own home repairs and save a lot of money.

Here is a typical example on how I saved myself a few quid. We all have a few tools lying around the house that we have forgooten about, and in my case they are all over the house. I have them in the shed, in cluttered drawers, in my car boot as well as the garage. Overa lot of years, I have accumulated an unbelievable amount of tools. I even thought of going to a boot sale when I realised how many tools I had accumulated.

You know how it is when a bloke goes shopping, I end up buying another tool or a gadget whether I need it or not, thinking that it may come in handy one day. I have every kind of tool that you can think of just lying around in various place in the home. I can recall that one day I purchased a peg board for my tools.  Now I have one in the shed and one in the garage. I spent an entire day organizing all my tools, hanging them on my peg boards.

Standing back, I admired my work and thought, "now I can find any tool I need, when I need it." I also have quite a good collection of DIY books. They too, are scattered all over the house. An overwhelming amount of knowledge was literally at my fingertips. "I am a man." "I can do anything," I thought. I often get in this state of mind, when I become challenged, and have to depend on myself to fix something, but this only happens when I can't afford to pay someone else to do it.

I suppose, it is more convenient to hire someone to do the odd small job rather than breaking in to my usual routine of boring days. Also, my knees thank me when I call the local contractor or home repair guy to come and put a new washer on my dripping tap. But then I always beat myself up while I am paying him the £50 charge, and thinking I could have done that myself.

A few weeks ago the back-light in my very old oven burnt out. I decided to have a go at replacing it myself. "How hard could it be?" I thought. All I had to do was remove a few tiny screws, take off the backing plate, remove the old bulb and put in the new bulb. So set about the task.
I struggled for what seemed like hours. I had more tools on the floor than God himself would have had while I attempted to align the tiny screws into the holes, and at the same time, holding a small flashlight between my teeth!

Sitting on the floor, I contemplated every move with care, feeling grateful that the oven door stayed down and did not come back up to slap me in the face. After a lot of effort, and a few swear words along with a prayer or two everything went back in to place. Now came the test. I closed the oven door, said another little prayer, switched on the light, and was amazed the light came on. I must have tested the switch a dozen times, unable to wipe the smile off my face. I had already wiped the sweat from my brow.

A couple of days after my triumph, the local handyman called around (actually he was more like a mate of mine, he had been to my house that often), he was asking me "Is there anything you need doing today?" I said "No" as I looked back at the bright light in my oven. "Well, you give me a call if something should come up and you need me. "Yes, If I lose my screwdriver, I will give you a call" I could hear him having a little chuckle to himself as walked away.

So the moral of my little story is this: you can save a lot of money by doing the smaller home repairs yourself. If it is something like a bulb in your cooker not working or a fuse that has blown in a plug socket, have a go at fixing it yourself. Even doing a bit of painting and decorating can save you a lot of money. Obviously, if you are not confident of doing slightly bigger jobs then hire in a contractor.

How we do it

Not every trader is a Right Trader! Our tradesman application process does not involve reference checks, insurance checks or checks for memberships at trade associations. Why? Because anyone can make this kind of information up - and they do. No, our tradespeople build their reputations on Right Trader with reviews from genuine clients. It's called crowd sourcing for information.

Why you need us

We take feedback very seriously. So we're fair to both our customers and our trades people. Not just anyone can leave a review. Feedback is only allowed from people who have employed that tradesman for a job from Right Trader.
